The DES Key Schedule

Type a key. Watch PC-1 remove the parity bits, the two halves rotate, and PC-2 select the subkey for each round.

Objectives
  • Trace a 64-bit key through PC-1, the round rotations and PC-2.

  • Locate the eight parity bits and test that changing them changes no ciphertext.

  • Compute the total rotation across sixteen rounds and check it against the register width.

  • Explain why the subkeys can be produced in reverse order for decryption.

  • Justify the claim that every key bit reaches most, but not all, of the sixteen subkeys.
